Looking for a Green Lawn Care Program?

Have you been searching for a step-by-step of what lawn care products to use on your turf and when? Look no further! Rob Garcia, our Lead Western Technical Specialist has created two lawn care programs below that will fit the bill.

He dives into the four types and sources of organic fertilizer, certifications of organic products, and what is a Natural Based product. 

Rob will also introduce you to Natural Based herbicides and insecticides to include in your green lawn care program.

 

Sustane Organic Fertilizer Program 

-This will include 4 applications per year - 

Spring Application:   4-6-4 for existing lawns at .5 pounds of N per 1000 square foot or 4-4-4 for new lawns (mycorrhizae within this product will improve the rooting). Application Early April

Mid-Summer.   8-2-4. For either situation new or established lawns.  .5 pounds per 1000 sq ft. Early June

Late Summer: 8-2-4. For either situation new or established lawns.  .5 pounds per 1000 sq ft. Early August

Fall:  4-6-4 -Extra phosphorus will with root development going into winter and is an ideal time to over seed areas that were performing poorly during the season. (check out our turf seed for varieties to over seed with)

 

ProPeat Fertilizer Natural Based Program

-This will include an application every 60 days thru the growing season-

First/Spring Application: 11-11-11 will give a good baseline for the season 5 pounds total material. Early April

Second Application: 13-5-8 will increase the nitrogen to keep the plant actively growing as we start to get warmer and maintain healthy turf as weed pressure increases. Early June

Third Application: 17-0-4 will maintain turf quality. Early August

Fourth Application:  13-5-8 will provide the extra phosphorus and potassium to promote a hardier plant as we approach winter. Late September

*You may substitute the 17-0-4 on all applications if you live in an area of the country where there are phosphorus restrictions for turfgrass applications. Check with your local extension office for fertilization rules in your area. 

 

Natural Based Weed Control Programs

Non-Selective Weed Control:   Finalsan

12.8 - 21 oz of Finalsan per gallon of water for spot spraying in rock, mulch and bedding areas.  Can be used through out the entire season for weed control in troublesome areas.

*Pro Fact: This is a concentrated liquid. Make sure you mix with the right amount of water. Always follow mixing guidelines on the label. Also, this is a non-selective herbicide and you will want to make sure you keep it away from other plants/turf that you don't want gone. 

Selective Weed Control:   Fiesta

12.6 -25.2 oz of Fiesta per 1000 sq ft of turf to be treated. Mix 5 oz of Fiesta per gallon of water and adjust the amount of solution to get the desired amount per 1000 sq ft.  This solution can be used as a spot spray mix as well.

*Pro Fact: This is a concentrated liquid. Make sure you mix with the right amount of water. Always follow mixing guidelines on the label.

With either application repeat every 3-4 weeks for best results.

Natural Based Insect Control


Azagaurd:  Azadirachtin formulation which is a purified formulation that is derived from neem oil. Excellent control of a variety of insects with good residual. (Can be used for aphids and other insects all season long)

Evergreen: Pyrethrum formulation which has great knockdown but short residual and can be used in areas with high sensitivity from people or pets.

Antixx Granular: Add this as a perimeter control to improve control of pests that are trying to enter homes or other structures.
